Afternoon storms are back: is your wiper blade ready?

Short answer

Replace your wiper blades if they leave streaks or a smeared film, judder or squeak across the glass, skip patches, or the rubber edge is cracked or torn. With afternoon storms expected until the end of October and the northeast monsoon usually starting in November, now is the time to check both blades and fit the right length for your car.

What the weather is doing

MetMalaysia said the southwest monsoon ended in early October and the inter-monsoon period runs until the end of October. Expect thunderstorms and heavy rain mostly in the afternoon and early evening, in the west and interior of the peninsula and in western Sabah and Sarawak (The Star, 7 October).

On 10 October its thunderstorm warning covered 14 states, including Kuala Lumpur (Bernama). A thunderstorm warning means rain heavier than 20 mm an hour lasting more than an hour (New Straits Times).

After that comes the northeast monsoon, which usually starts in November. Last season it began on 13 November 2025 and lasted until March 2026, with heavy rain peaking in December on the east coast and in Johor, Sabah and Sarawak (RTM, citing MetMalaysia).

In rain that heavy, the wiper blade is what stands between you and a blurred view of the car in front.

Five signs your blades are done

  1. Streaks — thin lines of water left behind on every pass.
  2. Smearing — a greasy film that glares under headlights at night.
  3. Judder or squeak — the blade chatters across the glass instead of gliding.
  4. Skipping — patches the blade doesn’t touch, often in the middle of the sweep.
  5. Damaged rubber — cracks, tears, or an edge that has gone hard and shiny.

Heat and sun age rubber even when the wipers aren’t used much, so a blade can look fine and still wipe badly. Wipe the edge with a damp cloth first; if it still streaks, replace it.

Get the size and the fitting right

Driver and passenger blades are usually different lengths, and wiper arms end in different fittings. Before you buy:

  • Look up your car in the wiper size finder. It gives the driver and passenger lengths for 243 car models sold in Malaysia, from ServAuto fitment records, and the adapter type for each.
  • Or measure the old blade end to end in inches.
  • Check the end of the wiper arm: a U-hook (the end bends back into a U) or a push-button fitting. DuraFit blades use the Adapter Fit System (A, B2, B5, B7, B9) to fit the common arm types.

Both lines come in every length from 14 to 28 inches. See DuraFit wiper blades for the full size list.

Before the monsoon

  • Replace both blades if either shows the signs above.
  • Top up the washer fluid and clean the windscreen inside and out; a dirty screen smears even with new blades.
  • Lift the blades off the glass if you park in the sun for long periods, or use a sunshade.

Frequently asked questions

How often should wiper blades be replaced?
There is no fixed interval. Sun and heat age the rubber, so check the blades at every service and before the rainy season, and replace them as soon as they streak, judder or skip, whatever their age.
Should I replace both blades at the same time?
Yes. They age at the same rate, and a new blade next to a worn one still leaves part of the screen streaky. Driver and passenger blades are usually different lengths, so check both sizes.
What is the difference between DuraFit Silent and Hydrophobic blades?
Silent uses AA-grade natural rubber with a PTFE coating for quiet everyday wiping. Hydrophobic uses silicone with a hydrophobic coating that beads water off the screen, for heavy rain and highway driving. Both come in 12 sizes from 14 to 28 inches.
How do I find my wiper size?
Use the DuraFit wiper size finder at durafit.my/wiper-size-finder: pick your make and model to see the driver and passenger lengths and the adapter type. You can also measure the old blade end to end in inches.
